What is NextGen TV aka ATSC 3.0?
NextGen TV, also known as ATSC 3.0, is a new television broadcasting standard that provides a number of improvements over the current ATSC 1.0 standard, such as 4K Ultra HD resolution, advanced audio, and interactive features. It also allows for mobile and internet-based TV viewing. It is being adopted by various stations and regions in the United States.
How does ATSC 3.0 Internet-based TV work?
ATSC 3.0, or NextGen TV, uses a combination of over-the-air broadcasts and internet connectivity to deliver television content. The over-the-air broadcasts, known as "broadcast-hybrid" delivery, provide the main content while internet connectivity provides additional features such as interactive services and targeted advertising.
When a viewer tunes in to a NextGen TV station, their television or tuner receives the over-the-air broadcast, which includes the main video and audio content. The broadcast also includes information about additional interactive services and features that are available through the internet connection. The viewer's device then connects to the internet to access these additional features, such as targeted ads or interactive program guides.
This "broadcast-hybrid" approach allows for a more efficient use of bandwidth by only sending the main content over the air, while allowing for additional features and services to be delivered through the internet. It also allows for more targeted advertising and interactive services that can be personalized for each viewer.
