What is Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity ?

C2PA, or Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is a joint initiative aimed at creating technical standards for certifying the authenticity of media content, including images, videos, and audio. Its goal is to help combat misinformation, deepfakes, and manipulated content by providing a way to track the provenance and history of digital media.

C2PA provides a framework that allows content creators to attach metadata to their media, detailing where it originated and any alterations made to it. This metadata can include information like the camera or software used, edits made, and the identity of the content's creator. This chain of information is then verifiable by anyone consuming the media, allowing viewers to determine if the content has been manipulated or remains in its original form.

In the video streaming context, C2PA could be used to ensure that video content being streamed or shared online is authentic and has not been tampered with, which is particularly important in industries like news media, entertainment, and user-generated content platforms where authenticity is crucial. It is a collaboration between major players like Adobe, Microsoft, Intel, Twitter, and Truepic to develop an open standard for this purpose.
